How do you make a $1 million in the boat industry?

The answer is invest $10 million, a joke but not necessarily true. When looking at all the recent statistics on boat sales, there are not a lot of new boat sales going on across the country, last year around 163,000.

That isn't the whole story for the industry. The marine accessory business has been increasing at a steady rate with a 3% increase last quarter alone according to the most recent NMMA statistics.

When we surveyed many of our distributors and dealers most agreed sales were up, and so were profits. So what is going on?

There are 12.8 million registered boats in the US, people already own them, instead of just looking at them in the driveway they are forgoing lengthy vacations and rentals at the beach and using what they already have. The price of fuel is down and a beautiful day on the water in ones boat is why we purchased the boat in the first place, and when things get tough we tend to resort back to the simpler moments. During the 2010 boating season 75 million people went boating the highest participation since 1999 and a increase of 14% over 2009.

The trend is to use what we have and then to upgrade with small and cost effective things. That is why all these stores are doing so well. In the Marine electronics most upgrades are for Navigation, radios and trendy new gadgets such as inflatable PFDs, Autotether wireless lanyards and LED lighting, overall trying to make a safer more efficient environment.

When we asked our dealers and distributors what was selling, safety was right up there at the top of the list. With most states requiring licensing and age limitations on drivers, boater are becoming much more aware of safety issues and the hazards of operating on the water. Some States are requiring the mandatory wearing of a PFD while under way and there are six states that have lanyard laws subject to a fineable offense. You have to be attached to your lanyard while your boat is moving, and this is moving into a federal directive.

Bottom line this all makes sense, it is easier to use these devices now that they have moved into the 21^st century, self inflatable PFDs are a perfect example and lanyard technology hasn’t improved or changed in 60 years until now and with the advent of wireless it is a no brainer. .

I’m not any different I will be putting aside gas money over the winter, I am going to make improvements to my 2003 Pursuit and get it looking like new and add some upgraded electronics to it and go out and enjoy myself.

CHESTER, CONNECTICUT (USA) – In a ceremony in New Haven, Connecticut on October 27, the wireless lanyard system manufactured by Autotether™ received the Connecticut Technology Council 2011 Innovation Pipeline Award as the most promising new technology product of the year.

Customer Autotether Story

While at the Miami Boat Show, a customer who bought a unit the year before told us his Autotether story

Several months ago he was at a gas dock getting fuel and his son was in the back of the boat and 4 year old daughter was in the passenger seat next to the helm. He had started the motor and jumped off the boat onto the dock to untie the lines. Just as he untied the boat his daughter pushed the throttle about 3/4 forward and the boat started to take off. He immediately pushed the panic button on his Autotether sensor to shut down the motor which averted a major accident.

He told us "every boat should have one, and thank god I had one".

If you love boats, last weekend's New York National Boat Show warmed your heart

There are literally dozens of boat shows this month - this past weekend alone there were nine of them! We checked out one of the biggest this past Thursday - the New York National Boat Show. Hopefully this post and our pictures will give you a taste of the show and maybe even encourage you to attend next year.

We took 100

More about the show...

Exhibits are spread among two huge expo areas in the Javits Center... One section is filled with large boats and yachts, many between 30 and 50 feet long. This is where you'll find most of the big boat brands, including huge displays from Sea Ray and Cobalt among others.

The other section also has several boat displays, including many wakeboard boats, jet skis, and fishing boats. But it also includes several aisles of interesting marine products and services. This is the area where you'll find the crew from Deadliest Catch, and see innovative products such as Autotether and many other things that will make you wonder how you boated without them for all these years!

This is also home to the marine electronics companies. If you are the type of boater that reads Panbo regularly, you are going to want to allow yourself extra time here to check out all the gadgets on display from FLIR/Raymarine, Simrad, Lowrance and the like.

I’ve often thought that my life would make an interesting “Behind the Story” episode, and over the last couple of years things have gotten even more interesting.

How does a guy who grew up in California owning and running nightclubs and restaurants come to sell a boating safety product in Connecticut and promote a concert to benefit coastal restoration in Louisiana?

It makes more sense than you might think. My sales and networking experience and abilities made me an appealing candidate for Autotether when I moved to Connecticut and was looking for a creative outlet appropriate for my sales, people and networking skills.

I, in turn, was immediately convinced that the Autotether products were an easy sell. They’re effective, simple in concept and easy to use, inexpensive, and they save lives!

Researching the marine environment and reading Google alerts about boating accidents, I saw how easily some injuries and deaths could have been avoided. Life on the water is enjoyable and rewarding, and it’s also dangerous and unforgiving. If we can help save people lives, reduce damage to families and property, I’m on board.

So I began applying the same methods I’d used over the years for a new purpose. Rather than enriching lives with good food and entertainment, building connections, promoting now-famous music acts in their early days, I’m helping a burgeoning business that literally saves lives – allows them to get to the restaurant or rock show another day….

While promoting Autotether in the Louisiana Gulf, meeting with some fishing industry celebrities and others with whom I’d opened discussions, I was moved by what I saw and heard. The region was still struggling from Hurricane Katrina, and now faced the devastating assault of the oil spill.

I met St. Bernard Parish President Craig Taffaro Jr. and other key leaders who were galvanized into an efficient team to combat the damage. They were a strong force, and I wanted to help. Why not combine the life-saving ideals of our company, Autotether, and tap into my extensive network of influential people built up through years in the entertainment industry, and create a moment to draw attention to this?

My idea grew from a small venue in Connecticut to a 40,000 capacity event in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana with Governor Bobby Jindal’s support.

We’re pulling together name brand sponsors, headlining acts, and music industry leaders to promote the importance of protecting coastal regions, boating safety, issues of concern for both the commercial and recreational fisherman, and all of the rest of us who are affected in the long run as well.

METS BOAT SHOW, Amsterdam

In November I attended the METS show in Amsterdam for the first time.

We were exhibiting our products -- the Autotether Wireless Lanyard and The Screamer Wireless Alarm System- in the Sea Tech & Fun Booth. It was the first time our products were shown at a European Show and the response was overwhelmingly positive.

I was surprised how wrong I was that people from countries I think of as having weak economies like Turkey, Egypt, Greece, Slovenia, and Dalmatia might not be interested in spending $200 for a safety device. They were among the most interested in marine safety.

The explanation was simple, their fishing fleets are comprised mainly small, single-handed fishing boats that go out daily in all kinds of weather. Concern for personal safety was tantamount to just about any other equipment and, price didn’t seem to be a deterrent.

The Netherlands is so concerned with boating safety that you are required to wear the PFD and be attached to a means of shutting off the boat motor while underway and going over 20 knots by law. These laws come with a stiff E200 fine and are enforced.

This was a very successful show; I learned a great deal and looking forward to next year.

Cruising with Kids & Pets

After 3 years of planning a trip around the Elizabeth Islands, on our 28’ Pursuit Cruiser we finally did it this year, and what a trip it was.

The weather was perfect and the seas were calm. We packed enough food and clothes on board for 2 adults, my 7 year old grandson, and our cocker spaniel Connor. But this blog isn’t about the trip as much as what it took to prepare for it.

A 28 foot boat may seem pretty big and secure until you get on the open water. The safety of the passengers and vessel is the primary concern of the captain and they need to prepare for any event that may occur.

I need to go through all the safety gear needed for this trip. First, I checked to make sure that my navigational aids – GPS, radar, etc. are working. I also made sure to have accurate navigational charts of the areas we were travelling in to back up the GPS.

Second, I checked all the life preservers and made sure we had at least 2 for every passenger including the dog. I made sure they were located in spots that are easily accessed. For my grandson we took 3 because he would be wearing one all the time unless he was sleeping. Swimming would be a major activity for he and the dog so they needed to have access to a dry one at all times.

Next, I filed a float plan that I gave to my daughter and told her that I would keep in touch by phone. If she couldn’t reach me I told her to follow the plan and I would not deviate without letting her know.

Last, I checked the batteries in my Autotether Wireless Lanyard and made sure I had a spare set on board. I wear my Autotether religiously, and on this trip my wife, grandson, and dog all wore the small personal sensor at all times. If they were to fall off the boat, it sounds an alarm alerting me to a man or dog overboard. The sensors are small enough to forget you had them with you. About the only excitement we had during the trip was on the first night while anchored offshore at Napatree Point. We had tied our dinghy up to the back of the boat and it came loose and was drifting away. Fortunately, we had put one of the Autotether sensors in it and when it got about 100 feet away the alarm sounded, which was great. My wife didn’t want me to start the boat so I had to swim to retrieve it which wasn’t so great.

Other than that the we all had fun, a trip we will not soon forget even the dog loved it, considering we had to carry him off the boat when we got home as he wouldn’t leave thinking this was his new home under the dinette table. I can’t wait till next year; I am already planning our next trip.

Fishing in Connecticut River

So I’m out on the shoal just south of the Connecticut river doing what I love the best: trolling for stripers with tube and worm at sunset. My 25ft Grady White is chugging along and I look back at my lines and notice one of my lines has picked up some seaweed.

I go back to the line, pick it up and retrieve it until the bait is next to the boat with the seaweed hung on it. I bend over the side of the my boat to clear the line and in an instant I find myself head over heals and submerged in the Long Island Sound! I pop my head out of the water and try to figure out what is going on. I float to the stern of the boat and manage to get myself back in. Soaking wet and disoriented I hear a high pitched pulsing noise coming out of the Host unit of my Autotether.

It is then that I realized that my boat had stopped because the Autotether had gone into alarm and shut off the engine! I had owned the Autotether for over the course of 2 fishing seasons and become so accustomed to using it, that it was like putting on a seatbelt in my car. I had taken the use of the Autotether for granted and was no longer really conscious that I was using it! But the one time that I needed it to work, it performed flawlessly and saved my life. Thanks Autotether!

My husband Thom & I have a 2 year old named TJ. It is amazing how priorities change when you have a child-safety becomes a big concern. Wear a life preserver on a boat, a helmet if you are riding a bike, snowboarding, skiing, etc…

How the Host and FOB communicate and visual signals

When a Host is turned on it will look to communicate with FOBs on the same channel for 3 minutes. You can tell that the Host is in the search mode because the LED under the “RESET” button will be flashing an amber color and the LED under the “POWER” button will be flashing green. If a communication with a FOB is not established within the 3 minutes the Host will turn itself off.
When the Host finds and is communicating with a FOB in the search mode one of the 4 LEDs at the bottom of the Host will flash green. Once the 3 minute search period is up the 4 LEDs at the bottom of the Host will stop flashing and go dark to save battery life. You can always check to see what FOBs the Host is talking to by momentarily pressing the “POWER” button and look for which LEDs are flashing at the bottom of the Host.
At the same time, when a FOB is turned on it will wait to communicate with a Host for up to 3 minutes before it will turn itself off.
When a FOB is communicating with a Host the LED on the FOB will show a blinking green LED every 4 seconds. When a FOB is not communicating with the Host the LED on the FOB will show a steady green light or be dark.
When a Host is turned off by pressing the “POWER” button for greater than 2 seconds, it will turn off the FOBs that it is in communication with, but those FOBs that are not in communication with the Host will stay on until 3 minutes have past and there is no communication with a Host and then will turn themselves off.
The ON/OFF button on the FOB really only turns the FOB on and it is the lack of communication with the Host over a period of time that will cause it to turn itself off. A secondary function of this button is as a panic button. In the case of an emergency, the button can be held down for several seconds to shut down the boat’s motor.

Wireless Lanyard Technology

After returning from my 74^th boat show since I began manufacturing and marketing the Autotether Wireless Lanyard, I feel compelled to address the various technologies of wireless lanyards which are emerging.

What was evident at this show, more than any other I’ve attended, is the interest in wireless technology especially wireless lanyards. I demonstrated, sold and answered more questions than I can remember.

Our little stand was packed with people almost the whole show. Most of the people were well aware of the different products out there and their questions were centered on what technology is the best and why is it better. What was clear is that price was not very high on the scale as reasons to buy. They were more concerned about; will this really work when I need it.

So let’s talk about the various technologies and how they work. The first wireless lanyard came out in the late 1990’s. Currently there are 5 companies making Wireless Man Overboard systems. With more to come, this is a rapidly emerging market with very large potential.

All of the systems are radio communication based systems. This means there is a signal sent to a base unit on the boat which receives the signal and acts on it, i.e. if some one goes over board it will sound an alarm and or shut down the motor.

Of the three current systems which shut off boat motors, two of them interface with the internal wiring of the motor emergency stop switch and motor ignition. The third system is an external acting solenoid that ejects the lanyard out of the kill switch automatically. It doesn’t have any interaction with the motor electronics.

The earlier developed systems use a passive technology, i.e. the sensor worn is not active or is turned off. When it gets wet it turns on and sends a signal for the host to act, such as turning off the motor. The newer systems are all active--meaning the host is in constant communication with the sensors and monitoring there presence, acting only if the signal disappears or weakens significantly.

There are benefits to all the systems but recently the active systems are proving to be more dynamic, reliable and cost effective.

In the marine industry certain things are a given, no motor or boat manufacturer will encourage or endorse another manufacturer to interfere with their electrical systems, and in most cases this will void the warranty.

Whatever certifications they may display does not mean the motor manufacturer endorses the product, in many cases these certifications are misleading. If you really want to be sure, call the manufacturer of your boat and or motor.

The following are things to be aware of for Passive Systems:

Advantages:

They are off.
They do not use power while off.
Batteries can last up to several years although not recommended.
You can have infinite amount of sensors.

Disadvantages:

When you need the system you can never be 100% sure it will activate.
If the sensors get wet they may unintentionally turn off the motor.
When the sensors get wet they cannot be used until dried of any moisture; they are not immediately reusable.
You can not differentiate between sensors; you do not know which sensor caused the alarm.
A wet sensor can turn off all boats motors within range on that bandwidth.
Hard-wired into the boat electrical system; requires installation and can void warranty service on the motor.
Placement of the sensor is critical for operation; it needs to get wet to work properly at the same time preventing it from getting wet during normal wear. This can be a problem with small children or pets.
Sensors have limited life and must be replaced periodically.

Active System

The advantages of the Autotether are:

System is fail safe
Runs on AAA batteries which are very inexpensive and easy to replace.
System will offer many years of service.
No wiring or tools for installation.
Does not interface with any electrical wiring on boat.
Meets ABYC spec for Standard A-33 emergency stop switch.
Will not affect motor warranty.
Sensors can get wet from rain or waves etc. and will not accidently shut off the motor; this system needs a body of water to go into an emergency mode.
Man Overboard is detected by an advanced proprietary software application eliminating accidental shut downs.
Can detect the difference between a man overboard situation or getting wet.
Sensors have a secondary panic button which can be used to shut down the motor in an emergency.
Internal watchdog circuitry which monitors the system for reliability; if the system develops a problem it will automatically signal a default code and alarm.
Response time is under 1 second.
Autotether is the only system that is certified for an Insurance Premium discount of 2.5% for the Travelers Insurance Company and 5% for the Sea Tow Insurance Company.

New Coast Guard Law

So you heard the rumors that the Coast Guard is going to try and make all of us wear our emergency stop lanyards on our boats, not just our jet skis, by getting a federal law passed in 2 years. Remember the red cord that very few of us wear that just dangles from somewhere on our dash?

So what is that all about? Most of you are probably unaware that 5 states already require them to be worn while under way subject to being fined. Those states are Nevada, Alabama, New Jersey, Louisiana, and Illinois.

The reason these laws are being created is because that there are millions of dollars in property damage and substantial loss of life due to runaway boats. Think about it, your boat carries enough gas to run at least 100 miles, if your boat is newer than 1990 you have power or hydraulic steering, which is not subject to torque oversteering, like the older boats were. On older boats if you let go of the steering it went in a circle. The newer boats will hold a course pretty well. You are also going much faster and there is still nothing to keep you from falling out, and falling overboard is what is happening. It is the leading cause of fatalities and injury on the water.
Here’s a interesting statistic, not to scare you, but make you more aware. You are 105 times more likely to be killed while in a boat, than be killed in your car and 75 times more likely to be seriously injured.

Boating technology has advanced in every sector--from hull material and design, to the motors and controls. The emergency stop lanyard was developed in the 1960’s for tiller type outboard motors to prevent the motors from running over the operator when they fell overboard. Here we are 50 years later and all the motor manufacturers haven’t changed much.

I have noticed recently as I read articles online or in print about boating or check out videos on you tube that it seems like a day doesn’t go by when they aren’t reporting a boating accident of some sort – people falling overboard, propeller injuries, etc. It is really getting frightening. .

Getting back to the Lanyard laws, the Coast Guard, who is in charge of maintaining the safety on the seas, feels the time and technology has come to provide a safer environment on the water.
The wireless lanyard technology is now available for wireless lanyards which are much more convenient than that old red cord and include safety to passengers as well. There are several manufacturers and probably more to come.

Bottom line, I don’t mind one bit to have a little wireless fob in my pocket that I know would automatically shut down my motor the second I went overboard. So, I wear an inflatable life vest for convenience, carry a wireless phone, and GPS, and wear my wireless lanyard, and have all the other right stuff.

Let’s face it, I work hard, make a decent living enough to buy and enjoy a boat -- why would I want to risk danger to myself or my family while doing something that is supposed to be my enjoyment.

So bring it on Coast Guard, I think it is a great idea.

Father's Day Gift Idea

I love my Dad but he is one of the toughest people to buy for. Every year Father's Day gets here and I try to come up with something "new" but never seem to get it right. I have 3 brothers, they all call and ask for ideas too. I tell them-- I got nothing!!

I feel like we have tried it all! His main 2 hobbies are golfing and sailing. I can't tell you how many golf gadgets I have gotten him - the ball picker upper, cool ball markers, new balls, zzzz....I think I just fell asleep just listing those off.

Come on! I'm a smart woman, I should be able to find something!

I've sailed all my life but never actually owned my own boat. Always got to ride on other people's boats (mainly Dad's). I never got my dad anything for his boat because what could he need? GPS - has it, depth finder, has it, etc...

New safety equipment for Mega Yachts

As the Captain of a mega yacht, you are responsible for the safety of all passengers and crew. You set and enforce guidelines and rules on the ships operation and equipment, such as the tenders and lifeboats for the crew and guests. I can’t imagine an owner objecting to any reasonable safety ruling by the captain especially considering the ultimate liability resides on the owner of the ship.

Crew are typically required to wear personal floatation devices (PFDs) and their lanyards when operating a tender or lifeboat. But do they wear them?

PFDs are easy to enforce because it is obvious if they are not being worn, in the case of the emergency stop lanyard it is more difficult.

The tender operator has to move about the vessel helping guests and securing the vessel before and after landing. Using the lanyard is near impossible as it gets very awkward trying to clip and unclip the lanyard rope from your person, accidental disconnects are common shutting down the motors unintentionally. After a couple of shutdowns, the effort to wear this lanyard is typically abandoned. Crews need the Autotether Wireless Lanyard, the latest in marine safety gear. They wear a small personal sensor, which provides an invisible wireless connection offering full mobility about the vessel. This they will use, with no excuses.

Installation is simple, it clips onto the emergency stop switch already on all tenders, requiring no tools or wiring. The operator and up to 3 other passengers wear a compact personal sensor clipped to their pfd or belt. No ropes, no cords, all wireless!! If the operator falls off the boat, the motor shuts off within 1.5 seconds. You also have the ability to shut off the motor remotely with the sensor at anytime, which can be very helpful in an emergency when you aren’t at the helm and you need the motor shut down right away.

What’s Going On in the Boating Industry

When looking at all the recent statistics on boat sales things looks bleak. New boat sales are typically 250,000 a year but last year were closer to 150,000.

But that isn’t what’s going on in the marine industry overall. West Marine just announced 4th quarter profits up significantly and ended the year debt free, a major improvement over 2008 which had record losses.

Defender Industries had a record breaking year in 2009 with sales up 10%, and they handed out bonuses to all their employees.

When we surveyed many of our other distributors and dealers most agreed sales were way up with record profits. So what is going on?

There are 12.8 million registered boats in the United States. People are forgoing vacations and rentals and getting out on the water in their boat. The price of fuel is down, and a beautiful day on the water is why they purchased the boat in the first place.

The trend is to use what we have, with some small and cost effective upgrades. That is why these stores are doing so well. In marine electronics, most upgrades are for navigation, radios, and trendy new gadgets such as inflatable PFDs, an Autotether wireless lanyard, and LED lighting, overall making a safer, more efficient environment.

When we asked our dealers and distributors what was selling, safety was right up at the top of the list. With most states requiring licensing and age limitations on drivers, boaters are becoming much more aware of safety issues and the hazards of operating on the water. Some states are requiring the mandatory wearing of a PFD while underway, and there are six states that have lanyard laws subject to a finable offense. You have to be attached to your lanyard while your boat is moving, and this is moving into a federal directive.

The bottom line is, this all makes sense, and it is easier to use these devices now that they have moved into the 21st century. Self inflatable PFDs and wireless lanyards are perfect examples and should be no brainers. That is why the sales of Autotether wireless lanyards has taken off. In boating and fishing forums, such as reelboating and the hulltruth, which are great for sensing the direction of things in the boating industry, safety awareness is a big subject.

I’m not any different. I’ve been saving gas money over the winter, I have a 2003 Pursuit, and I am going to make improvements to it, get it looking like new, and add some upgraded electronics. Then I’ll go out fishing and enjoy myself.

Buying Safety Gear Can Be An Impulse Purchase

No one likes to think of an accident happening to them especially in a boat -- which unlike a car is usually an elective experience and something we do for enjoyment. For this reason, safety is a very difficult sell, especially in the marine industry. Some of us wear life preservers and some even wear the lanyard, but overall it is a very low percentage. Those of us who do not use PFDs and lanyards will be the first to admit that it is a good idea but it is inconvenient to hassle with this type of gear.

None of us would buy a car today without an airbag in it. We are accustomed to the convenience of airbags, seen the statistics and evidence, and wouldn’t think of buying a car without airbags.

It takes a lot of data to convince us to purchase safety because we do not want to face the reality that boating can and is dangerous.

When I do boat show demonstrations on our Autotether Wireless Lanyard System, and I have been in front of thousands of people, I have become convinced that the decision to purchase has to be on the spot, an impulse buy. Once they walk away, most people do not dwell on getting into an accident or getting thrown overboard -- although they recognize this is a real possibility. The second thing is a matter of simple economics -- why should I spend money on a device that I will hopefully never need? That is one of the reasons that there are millions of people walking around this country without health insurance.

I call it an impulse buy because we walk around saying we need this, or I am going to buy it as soon as I get the money. They have done their research on safety products such as wireless lanyards and see the value in it but just don’t want to spend the money right now. When in fact, we go out to dinner and spend several hundred dollars in a month , spend money on television subscriptions costing $80/month, among other nonessentials that we do not need.

So how do these things get sold? They are presented to us in a fashion or manner that is immediate and easy to do. We take our wallet out at the moment we recognize the need. The person selling or the media ad presents itself in a way that we recognize the need and can act on it at that moment -- by making a telephone call or simply saying, I will take it.

Once the purchase is made, very few if any regret their purchase.

So here is what I say to all of you procrastinating on the purchase of equipment for your boat that can save your life, or the life of someone you love -- you already have done your homework you recognize the need, so now act on it.

Are you a boater with teenagers who may be using the boat this summer? Don’t wait for the unimaginable to happen -- the call from the police saying there has been accident.

Start boating safety habits now! Get your kids in the habit of using boating safety gear first by leading by example, don’t expect them to use a PFD and the emergency stop lanyard if you don’t use them.

The PFD and emergency stop lanyard are probably the two most important pieces of safety equipment on the boat. If you fall out of the boat or have a collision and you end up in the water you will need to float and don’t expect being able to swim will be enough to keep you afloat.

Once afloat the boat needs to stop and stop quickly. That way you can get back in the boat and save yourself. You also don’t have an ongoing liability of a runaway boat that could harm someone else or their property.

As a child with less experience on the water, it is more likely that they will be less cautious and have a fall overboard. Especially when you consider they may be with their friends, things tend to become more precarious.

Wearing safety equipment is about developing the right habits. If you were to ask your child if they would feel comfortable riding their bike without a bike helmet they would tell you no. They have been riding with helmet from the first day so they set off their bike and it is part of the routine. The boat isn’t any different, and like the bike helmet we need to make it convenient and effective.

PFD’s need to be worn and they are now inflatable, very compact, and comfortable even on a hot day.

The emergency stop lanyard (the Red Rope) which most of the time isn’t used by many boat operators because it is inconvenient and hasn’t been technologically improved in 40 years has finally been improved! "I recently purchased an Autotether from a private individual and was very happy with the purchase, however, there was one problem it had the wrong clip. I called Autotether to see if they could help get one that would work with my Yamaha and was surprised by the response. Remember I did not buy it from either the factory or a dealer but a private individual.

I had a very short turnaround time since I was heading to Mexico in a few days and wanted the unit working before I left. I talked to Joe Perez and Andrea Frickman concerning my dilemma. To say they were helpful would be a gross understatement. They not only got the clip and the tools to change it to me before my departure but would take no money whatsoever. This bill establishes safety standards for the operation of motorboats that are equipped with engine cut-off switches. The engine cut-off switch is activated by a mechanical or wireless device which serves as a link between the operator and the engine cut-off switch. This bill prohibits a person who owns or controls a motorboat that is equipped with an engine cut-off switch from operating or authorizing another person to operate the

motorboat at a rate of speed greater than 5 nautical miles per hour if the engine cutoff switch or engine cut-off switch link is missing, disconnected or not operating properly. This bill also prohibits any person from operating such a motorboat at a rate of speed greater than 5 nautical miles per hour unless the engine cut-off switch link is attached to his body, clothing or personal flotation device.

STUART, FL -- Jeremy Glass was enjoying the holiday weekend on the water with friends when he spotted a small boat tearing through the St. Lucie Inlet at 30 mph with no one at the wheel.

"The boat was headed right toward us so it was definitely a moment of panic," he recalls.

Martin County Sheriff's deputies say three people were riding on that 23 foot Contender when a large swell knocked them overboard. The boat kept going.

Jeremy’s father watched it happen. He said another boat fished the three people out of the water, so he turned his attention to the runaway boat.

"We decided to follow the boat make sure it didn’t run over anybody," said Virgil Glass.

The shoreline was packed with recreational boaters and fishermen. The boat could have hit anything or anyone.

"There were people on the north side of the rocks, people on the south side of the rocks fishing and they had absolutely no clue," said Jeremy.

Jeremy started shooting video of the chase, which he later posted on You Tube.

In the video, you can see the runaway boat veers 180 degrees and heads right for a rocky jetty along the inlet. The boat crashes into the rocks and flies 3 to 4 feet in the air before landing on the other side of the jetty.

Jeremy and his friends drove to the other side of the jetty, then jumped in the water to turn off the motors on the runaway boat.

"It had some holes in it and the motor was smoking pretty bad," said Virgil Glass.

Save one small injury, deputies say the three people ejected from that boat were OK, but add they could have avoided the whole episode if the captain had worn a lanyard on his wrist, tied to the kill switch on the boat.

"It was a freak accident but it’s good it played out like it did," said Jeremy Glass.

October and November – The Deadliest Months for Boaters

Thanks to the BoatsUS Foundation for the warning today that two fall months now coming upon us are the deadliest for boating. Although more boaters are killed in accidents during the high summer season, October and November have the highest percentage of fatalities.

The BoatsUS warning is based on the U.S. Coast Guard’s 2008 statistical report on recreational boating accidents published in mid-August.

According to the Coast Guard statistics, the situation that carries the highest risk of death is to be fishing in a fiberglass open boat 10-years or more old, in October or November, in good weather, moving at less than 10 mph, drinking an alcoholic beverage, and not wearing a life jacket. If you are doing all nine of those things, and fall overboard, you better hope you are a cat, or that your life insurance is paid up and your beneficiary is correctly identified.

Alcohol continued to be the largest contributor to boating accident deaths in 2008, almost three-times higher than the next leading factor.

Other deadly activities noted by the Coast Guard are operating a boat in a careless manner, dangerous waters, not paying attention (has texting come to boating?), and passenger behavior (be careful about whom you invite to go boating with you).

2008 was the deadliest year for boating since 2002, although the number of boating accidents was down. California took over from Florida in 2008 as the deadliest state for the first time in five years closely followed by Louisiana and Texas. Hawaii continued its unblemished five-year record of no fatalities from boating despite its adventurous boating conditions.

New boat and yacht insurance discount encourages safer boating

HARTFORD, Conn., August 18, 2009 – To help encourage safe boating, Travelers, a leading provider of boat and yacht insurance, today announced a new discount* on boat and yacht insurance premiums for boaters that use the Autotether wireless emergency stop lanyard. These devices are designed to reduce the chances of a runaway boat by turning off the motor should the boat’s operator go overboard.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, falls overboard are consistently a leading cause of boating fatalities, thousands of dollars of property damage and injuries to innocent victims each year. Incidents where the operator falls overboard and the boat is left without anyone to steer can be easily avoided when the proper safety devices are used by the vessel’s operator.

“Encouraging safe boating is a top priority at Travelers as falls overboard place everyone in the water at risk,” said Chantal Cyr, vice president of the Boat and Yacht Division at Travelers. “We expect that offering a boat and yacht insurance premium discount will encourage powerboat owners to consider using a wireless emergency stop lanyard to make boating safer for everyone on the water.”

Wearing an emergency stop lanyard is required by law in only six states - Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Nevada and New Jersey. According to Autotether, a leading producer of a wireless emergency stop device, most operators surveyed do not wear the emergency stop lanyard and admitted to leaving the helm at one time or another when the vessel is under way. The main reason boaters cite for not wearing it is that the lanyard is restrictive and inconvenient around the helm as it is typically connected to the operator from the boat’s ignition.

“We’ve found that boaters do not want to be restricted to the helm and most emergency stop lanyards are inconvenient,” said Anthony Viggiano, president of Autotether. “The wireless device frees the boat operator while giving them and their crew the peace of mind in knowing the boat will stop if the operator goes overboard or an alarm will sound if a passenger accidentally slips out.”

Travelers is currently reviewing safety devices made by other manufacturers in the hopes of offering this discount in the future to boaters who own them.

As Harbor Master of Groton Long Point, I spend a considerable amount of time alone on my boat, which is a 23' Grady White walk around. Obviously, many things can go wrong. For example, a boat recently broke loose from one of its mooring lines in Venetian Harbor as a result of heavy winds, and I had to go out and re-secure the boat. I was in an awkward position on the boat and could have easily fallen into the water. Last summer I had to rescue a wind surfer who had gotten caught in a thunderstorm.

Tips on Avoiding False Alarms

Sometimes it is difficult to read instruction manuals with all their techno talk and legalese. Here are some tips, hopefully written in plain language, to help you get the most out of your Autotether system.

The Autotether was designed to fail safe – the absence of radio communication once established will cause an alarm. Low batteries and the shielding of radio communication can cause an unwanted/nuisance alarm.

What can be done by the end user to eliminate nuisance alarms?

1) Use the yellow clip provided and wear your FOB/Personal Sensor on the sides of you waist, not the middle of the stomach or back. The outside of the forearm or wrist is another good place to locate the FOB. The goal is to maintain as much line-of-sight between the Host and the FOB to maintain good radio communication.

2) The Host should be located in an open area not obstructed by metal. Metal is a reflector of radio signals and may inhibit radio communication between the Host and the FOB.

3) To have the best communication between the Host and FOB wear the FOB with the serialized label sticking out.

4) Do not put yourself in a position where the radio signals from the Host and FOB must to go through your body to maintain communication. Your body is 75% water and you could fool the system to think your have fallen in the water and cause an alarm. The further away from your body the FOB is, the better the radio communication is with the Host. Attaching the FOB to your standard PFD creates an ideal condition.

5) The system is designed to protect the user when he/she is on deck. When you go below you increase the risk of a false alarm because of bulkheads and different materials the radio signal must pass through. You will need to test your system to see how well it works when you or your passengers go below. If going below causes an issue, simply leave your FOB on deck close to the Host and put it back on when you go back on deck.

6) Units mounted on large boats where the Host is located on a flying bridge need to be tested by the end user for effectiveness.

7) If the flashing light on the FOB/Personal Sensor is not green, but amber or red, change the batteries in the whole system including the Host.

8) If any of the 4 flashing lights on the lower left face of the Host or the one under the Power button are not green, but amber or red, change the batteries in the whole system including the FOBs.

Implementing some or all of these tips will give you a fault free and safe boating experience.

The Screamer Pool Alarm System

Our newest product is called the Screamer. When we designed this product we had sailboats and towed dinghies in mind. But the newest and most popular application is around the swimming pool.

Conventional pool alarms systems that detect motion, are only useful when the pool is not in use. “The Screamer” can be used during chaotic pool time when a child can easily slip below the surface, unnoticed. When the sensor is submerged in water, the receiver flashes red lights as well as sounding a pulsating alarm of 105 decibels, alerting the caregiver that the wearer is below the water’s surface.

Here are some statistics:
-70% of preschool drowning occurs while in the care of one or both parents.
- 19% of all children related drowning occurs at public pools where a lifeguard is present.
- The majority of children who drown,do so in backyard pools at their own home.
- Most children who drown were missing for less then 5 minutes.

Uses for an Emergency Stop (Kill) Switch

An emergency stop (kill) switch isn’t just for shutting down your boat’s motor. Although that is the most common use, the kill switches manufactured by Mercury can be tied in electrically to other devices on your boat. For example it can be used to:
• Plot a man overboard spot on a GPS;
• shut off the autopilot so a sailboat will turn into the wind;
• blow the horn on the boat;
• place the servo motor on the autopilot in a default position turning the boat into the wind by wiring into the anemometer;
• activate the MOB button on the new Raymarine autopilots to pilot the boat around the MOB position; and
• turn off a gas or diesel motor or multiple motors.

Also, the kill switch is manufactured by Mercury but could be installed to be used with any kind of engine.

Last Friday, I was fishing by myself on the south side of Fishers Island, New York in a mild sea - waves were 1 to 2 feet and very consistent. I was following a school of bait fish and I wash plugging on top of the waves for Blues and Bass.

I was wearing my Autotether man overboard wireless lanyard and casting from the side of the boat into the school of fish having a great time. I had the wheel locked down and the motors running to hold a course of 3 knots alongside the school.

Just as I cast and my body weight shifted over the side, a large wave hit the boat, throwing me over. I was able to grab onto the boat as I was about to go over, although most of me was over the side and as the wave passed it rocked the boat in the opposite direction and I was able to roll back in.

The experience reminded me how vulnerable we are on the water and when a fun time can turn into a frightening experience in a second. Fortunately, if I had fallen in the Autotether would have shut my motor down allowing me to swim back to my boat.

Falling overboard was the leading cause of death on the water of all accident types according to the US Coast Guard statistics of 2007. That is why I wear a PFD and an Autotether whenever I go fishing.
