How do you make a $1 million in the boat industry?

The answer is invest $10 million, a joke but not necessarily true. When looking at all the recent statistics on boat sales, there are not a lot of new boat sales going on across the country, last year around 163,000.

That isn't the whole story for the industry. The marine accessory business has been increasing at a steady rate with a 3% increase last quarter alone according to the most recent NMMA statistics.

When we surveyed many of our distributors and dealers most agreed sales were up, and so were profits. So what is going on?

There are 12.8 million registered boats in the US, people already own them, instead of just looking at them in the driveway they are forgoing lengthy vacations and rentals at the beach and using what they already have. The price of fuel is down and a beautiful day on the water in ones boat is why we purchased the boat in the first place, and when things get tough we tend to resort back to the simpler moments. During the 2010 boating season 75 million people went boating the highest participation since 1999 and a increase of 14% over 2009.

The trend is to use what we have and then to upgrade with small and cost effective things. That is why all these stores are doing so well. In the Marine electronics most upgrades are for Navigation, radios and trendy new gadgets such as inflatable PFDs, Autotether wireless lanyards and LED lighting, overall trying to make a safer more efficient environment.

When we asked our dealers and distributors what was selling, safety was right up there at the top of the list. With most states requiring licensing and age limitations on drivers, boater are becoming much more aware of safety issues and the hazards of operating on the water. Some States are requiring the mandatory wearing of a PFD while under way and there are six states that have lanyard laws subject to a fineable offense. You have to be attached to your lanyard while your boat is moving, and this is moving into a federal directive.

Bottom line this all makes sense, it is easier to use these devices now that they have moved into the 21st century, self inflatable PFDs are a perfect example and lanyard technology hasn’t improved or changed in 60 years until now and with the advent of wireless it is a no brainer. .

I’m not any different I will be putting aside gas money over the winter, I am going to make improvements to my 2003 Pursuit and get it looking like new and add some upgraded electronics to it and go out and enjoy myself.

Autotether Offers Holiday Rebate

Give the Gift of Safety This Holiday Season

Chester, Ct., December 5, 2011 – Safety-conscious boaters have more to celebrate this holiday season thanks to wireless safety device manufacturer Autotether. The company is offering a $20 rebate to customers purchasing its wireless kill switch or Screamer wireless alarm products before December 31, 2011, making Autotether the perfect holiday gift for boaters.

Safety Lanyards: Cutting the Cord

Man overboard incidents represent the leading cause of injury and death among boaters – incidents entirely avoidable with an engine kill switch. Since traditional systems tend to restrict movement and are prone to accidental engine shut-off, however, many boaters choose not to connect them. By contrast, Autotether’s radio frequency (RF) sensors connect wirelessly to any kill switch, sounding an alarm and shutting down engine operation within 1 ½ seconds of a pilot or passenger falling into the water. Passenger sensors may also be used to shut down the engine in the event of a runaway boat.

Autotether is simple to install aboard any boat, and requires no drilling or cutting. The receiver attaches to the boat’s dash using dual lock strips, and clips directly to the boat’s factory-installed kill switch. The receiver has a battery life of 150 hours and lights a low-charge indicator when its AAA-batteries need replacing. Since it’s easy to install, Autotether is also transferrable between boats and is the perfect safety device to take on board with friends who don’t have the system.

Autotether™ Wins Connecticut Tech Council Innovation Award
For Wireless Lanyard System

CHESTER, CONNECTICUT (USA) – In a ceremony in New Haven, Connecticut on October 27, the wireless lanyard system manufactured by Autotether™ received the Connecticut Technology Council 2011 Innovation Pipeline Award as the most promising new technology product of the year.

“We’re honored to be recognized by our home state Technology Council. With the U.S. Coast Guard currently developing a regulation to require the installation and use of engine cut-off switches, this award couldn’t come at a better time for our company,” said Autotether CEO Anthony Viggiano.

The new Coast Guard regulation would require the installation and use of engine cut-off switches (lanyards) for boats less than 26 feet. Lanyards turn off a boat's engine if the operator is ejected from the boat, preventing boating injuries and casualties caused when people are struck by the boat or its propeller.

While cut-off switches are already standard equipment on many small powerboats, the factory-installed systems require the operator to be tethered to the boat. As a result, these systems limit mobility on board and boaters generally don’t use them.

Autotether Wireless Lanyard System

The patented Autotether Wireless Lanyard System (shown right, above) is an easy-to-install, unobtrusive wireless unit. No wiring or tools are required – the system clips to the existing kill switch and is self-powered with AAA batteries.

A small personal sensor sends radio waves to a receiver connected to a boat’s engine and Autotether shuts off the engine if the boat operator falls into the water. It also sets off an alarm if passengers on the boat wearing the Autotether sensors (including children and pets) fall into the water. The passenger sensors can also shut off the boat’s engine when the red alert button is pushed in the event that you have a runaway boat.

Some insurance companies offer a discount on boat insurance for boats equipped with an Autotether Wireless Lanyard System.
